Productivity and Analytics in the National Spotlight

Donald M. Norris

The Lumina National Productivity Conference, held in Indianapolis November 15-16 is focusing on state-level efforts across the nation to raise productivity and deal with the budget shortfall situation confronting the states.  Lumina has produced two products that will prove highly useful to state-level and institutional leaders.  "Navigating the New Normal" is a written report that frames the economic limitations of “The New Normal” in the context of Lumina’s Big Goal of having 60% of Americans achieve a high value course of study, certificate, or degree.  With support from Lumina, The National Center for Higher Education Management Systems has created Student Flow and Productivity Models accessed from a useful Dashboard.  This tool enables users to examine accountability analytics and do “what if?” analyses.

Today, Donald Norris delivers the keynote address on “The Real Story on Online Learning” which presents how new approaches to productivity analytics, online learning, certification of learning, and linkages to employability will be critical to raising productivity and meeting Lumina’s Big Goal. These issues are also discussed in the White Paper “Transformation Through Online Learning and Competence Building.”

This theme was carried forward by Peter Smith, Vice President for Academic Strategies and Development, who observed that a student-centric, employment-focused experience was desired by students seeking to lift out of recession.  "Do it better, cheaper, or more appropriately—that's the metric for universities," he said...

The "Summative" Goal of Action Analytics

I'm in St. Paul at the Action Analytics Symposium 2010 thinking about action analytics in terms or purpose.  Shouldn't educators not only monitor internally and continuously improve the practices and the processes that they and their employers use to advance students through the life-long education pipeline, but also try to understand in the aggregate whether those practices and processes at scale are affordable and effective from the perspectiv...
